Top Three reasons for sticking doors - 2007-06-10
The three most common reasons for doors sticking are;
- Hinge Failure
- New carpet or floor covering
- Excessive paing
Hinge Failure
To check if the hinges are faulty, open the door and holding the handle side try to move the door up and down. If there is movement then check the screws. Firstly tightenthem, if this fails to resolve the issue then try replacing them with screws 6mm longer. It's a good idea to take some wooden cocktail sticks dipped in good quality wood glue and insert them in the holes left by the old screws. Let the glue dry and cut off the excess. Once this has been completed you can screw the hinge back in place. If after doing this and there is still movement then it is most likely that the hinge itself needs replacing. Make sure you buy exactly the same type of hinge, use the pictures supplied to find the ideal replacement
New carpets or floor covering
If you have just had new carpets or floor coverings fitted and teh door is sticking, then the answer is simple, the door proabably needs some removing from the bottom. Take the door off and remove 6mm from the bottom with a plane or a saw and refit the door, repeat until the problem is solved.
Excessive paint
Paint can be a factor, remove the door - take it to a specialist door stripper or using a proprietary paint remover, strip the door back to bare wood and repaint to suit your taste
